MATHEMATICS — QUADRATIC SOLVER

Every quadratic, solved to the root.

Type a, b and c — the discriminant renders its verdict, the quadratic formula runs end-to-end, and both roots land in exact form: clean fractions, simplified surds, or a conjugate pair. The parabola bends into place beside them. Nothing rounds, nothing waits, nothing leaves your browser.

How to use it

Sixty seconds to mastery. The solver is live from the first keystroke — here is how to read everything it shows you.

STEP 01

Enter a, b, c

Three boxes, one equation. Type 1, −5, 6 and you're solving x² − 5x + 6 = 0 — the echo line rewrites itself with proper signs as you go.

a = 1 · b = −5 · c = 6
STEP 02

Watch Δ render its verdict

The discriminant row updates on every keystroke. Its sign tells you the fate of the roots before any formula runs: two real, one double, or a complex pair.

Δ = 25 − 24 = 1 → 2 real
STEP 03

Read the exact roots

The big line never rounds: reduced fractions, simplified surds like −1 ± √2, or a conjugate pair with i. Decimals appear only as a reference row.

x1 = 3 · x2 = 2
STEP 04

Follow the written proof

Under the screen, the full work: substitution into the formula, squares pulled out of the radical, the gcd divided through, Vieta's checks at the end.

x = (5 ± 1)/2 ✓
STEP 05

Flip to GRAPH

The parabola draws itself around your roots: vertex, axis of symmetry and y-intercept marked, window auto-fitted, complex case flagged honestly.

Learn from the chips

One tap loads a factorable, a surd, a double-root and a complex case — the four personalities of a quadratic. Watch how Δ changes for each.

Questions, answered

The discriminant, the formula, complex roots, Vieta's checks — the quadratic, from every angle.

Q.01What is the quadratic formula?
x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a solves every quadratic ax² + bx + c = 0 with a ≠ 0. It comes from completing the square once, symbolically — so it works even when factoring fails. This tool substitutes your a, b, c and writes out each line of the result.
Q.02What does the discriminant Δ = b² − 4ac tell me?
Its sign predicts the roots: Δ > 0 means two distinct real roots (the parabola crosses the x-axis twice); Δ = 0 means one repeated root with the vertex on the axis; Δ < 0 means no real roots — a complex conjugate pair. If Δ is positive and a perfect square (with integer coefficients), both roots are rational, which is exactly when factoring is easy.
Q.03How do I solve a quadratic by factoring?
Find two numbers that multiply to a·c and add to b. For x² − 5x + 6 the numbers are −2 and −3, giving (x − 2)(x − 3) and roots x = 2, 3. Factoring only works cleanly when the roots are rational; otherwise the quadratic formula is the way. The solver displays the factored form automatically whenever it exists.
Q.04What are complex roots — what if Δ is negative?
Taking the square root of a negative number introduces i, where i² = −1. The roots then come as a conjugate pair p ± qi: for example x² + x + 1 = 0 gives x = −1/2 ± (√3/2)i. Geometrically, the parabola never touches the x-axis. The solver keeps the exact surd part of the imaginary component — no rounding.
Q.05How do I find the vertex and axis of symmetry?
The vertex is at h = −b/2a, k = −Δ/4a, and the axis of symmetry is the vertical line x = h. If a > 0 the parabola opens upward and the vertex is the minimum; if a < 0 it opens downward and the vertex is the maximum. The GRAPH tab marks all of these live.
Q.06What happens if a = 0?
The equation is not quadratic — it becomes the line bx + c = 0 with root x = −c/b. The solver detects this, labels the equation linear and solves it anyway. If b is also 0, it tells you whether there is no solution (0 = c ≠ 0) or every x is a solution (0 = 0).
Q.07What are Vieta's formulas?
x₁ + x₂ = −b/a and x₁·x₂ = c/a. They hold exactly — even for surd and complex roots, where the radical parts cancel. They are a fast sanity check: x² − 5x + 6 must have roots summing to 5 and multiplying to 6, so 2 and 3.
Q.08Is the tool free, exact and private?
Completely free, no sign-up. Integer coefficients are solved with integer arithmetic — fractions reduced, radicals simplified, no rounding anywhere. Decimal inputs are computed to 9 significant figures and marked with ≈. Everything runs locally in your browser, and the page keeps working offline once loaded.
