Hash anything, instantly.
Paste text, drop a file, or generate random bytes. SHA-256 runs locally with the Web Crypto API — nothing is ever sent anywhere.
Live hash updates as you type.
Drag & drop a file here, or click to browse
The file is read locally — it never leaves your device.
Cryptographically secure random bytes, then hashed. Regenerate anytime.
SHA-256 is 256 bits — hex is 64 characters, Base64 is 44 characters with padding.
Four steps, a hash you can trust.
No manual required — here's the entire flow.
Choose an input mode
Pick Text for direct typing or pasting, File to hash an uploaded document, or Random to generate secure random bytes first.
Provide your input
Type or paste text, drag and drop a file, or adjust the random byte length. The hash updates automatically as you type in text mode.
Compute SHA-256
Tap Compute SHA-256 to hash your input. The 64-character hexadecimal (or Base64) result appears instantly.
Copy or download
Copy the hash to your clipboard, or download it as a .txt file. Nothing is stored — refresh and it's gone.
Built for real security, not just hashing.
The details that make a hash generator trustworthy, without ever leaving your browser.
Runs on your device
Every hash is computed locally using the Web Crypto API. Nothing is logged, saved, or sent anywhere — ever.
Text, files & random
Three input modes cover every use case: hash a sentence, verify a download, or generate secure random data.
Hex & Base64 output
Switch output format with one tap. Both represent the same 256-bit digest, just encoded differently.
Questions people actually ask.
The short answers — with the long ones one tap away.
What is a SHA-256 hash?+
A SHA-256 hash is a 256-bit (32-byte) fingerprint of data, typically shown as 64 hexadecimal characters. It's a one-way function: you can't reverse it to get the original input, and any change to the input produces a completely different hash.
Is this SHA-256 generator safe to use?+
Yes. Everything happens locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Your text, files, and generated hashes are never uploaded, logged, or stored anywhere.
Can I hash a file with this tool?+
Yes. Switch to the File tab, then drag and drop a file or click to browse. The tool reads the file locally and computes its SHA-256 hash without uploading it.
What does the random data option do?+
The Random tab generates cryptographically secure random bytes and hashes them. It's useful for testing, creating unique identifiers, or generating hash examples.
Can I use this tool for password storage?+
No. SHA-256 is not a password-hashing algorithm. For passwords, use a dedicated password hashing function like bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2, which are designed to be slow and resist brute-force attacks.
Is the SHA-256 output always the same for the same input?+
Yes. SHA-256 is deterministic: the same input always produces the same 64-character hash. Even a tiny change — like an extra space — produces a completely different hash.
Does this tool store or remember any hash I generate?+
No. Nothing is saved, logged, or synced. Once you leave or refresh the page, every input and hash is gone.
Is this SHA-256 generator free to use?+
Yes, it's completely free with no account, no sign-up, and no limit on how many hashes you generate.
